Tributes paid to former Headteacher Mrs Jane Mann

Leanne Johnston

It is with great sadness that The King Edward VI School announces the death of our former Headteacher, Mrs Jane Mann, aged 74.

Originally from Bedfordshire, Mann studied History at Lancaster University before completing her teaching qualification in Manchester. She began her teaching career in Bedfordshire before moving to Plumstead, where she taught in the London Borough of Bexley. During this time, she became actively involved in the Labour Party and, during the Miners’ Strike of 1984–85, opened her home to striking miners and helped organise fundraising to support their families.

After relocating to County Durham, Mann was appointed Deputy Headteacher. At a time when women in senior leadership were still rare, she founded a support network for female Deputy Headteachers. The group became a valued source of professional encouragement and endured for 35 years. A testament to her commitment to supporting others.

Mann’s first headship was in Hartlepool before she succeeded Michael Duffy as Headteacher of The King Edward VI School in 1995. A consummate professional, she held herself and those around her to the highest standards while combining high expectations with a deep belief in the transformative power of education. Mann was a vibrant, committed individual and a compassionate advocate of a holistic education for young people.  She took every opportunity to celebrate students’ achievements and her ethos was one of inclusivity. The rewards and celebration evenings she introduced continue to be an integral part of the school. As the first female Headteacher in the school’s history, she led with strength, integrity and vision until her retirement in 2007, leaving a legacy that continues to shape the school today.

Retirement marked not the end of Jane’s public service, but the beginning of a new chapter. Having lived in Alnwick for more than 30 years, she devoted herself to the local community as a Town Councillor, served on the Board at HMP Acklington,  and was also a trustee of the Children’s Trust. In 2010 she became a Trustee of Bailiffgate Museum and in 2015 was named National Museum Volunteer of the Year in recognition of her exceptional contribution in this role.

Jane will be remembered as a remarkable woman of intellect, determination and compassion, with an unwavering sense of civic duty. Throughout her life, she dedicated herself to education, public service and the communities she called home and will be greatly missed.

As part of the Morpeth Heritage Weekend, the Youth Centre was opened to the public on Saturday 19 September. We had over 60 vidsitors and more requests to view the exhibition are still coming!

The exhibition was a real success with a constant stream of visitors (alumni plus others) throughout the four hours. Feedback was very positive with requests for more events. We offered a taste of cakes and biscuits from wartime and code breaking puzzles too. Our oldest visitor was 84  years old and our youngest were  7 and 11yrs. A couple visited to see the Raymond Pratt Shield for Shooting; he was a great great uncle. The shield was presented to the school in his honour after he died near the end of WW1.

Mountain Biking Success!

Leanne Johnston

Congratulations to Year 10 student, Sam and his team who competed in the National Championships.

Sam secured an impressive second overall in the Scottish Downhill Series, third in the British National Downhill Series and second spot in the final national race of the year. The Reifen Team also ranked second in the national points series, a truly exceptional year.

Since his national success, Sam has recently come back from Schladming, Austria where he competed in the iXS International Rookies Championships, the unoffocial world championship for young riders. He secured an impressive 4th place finish, just 0.1 seconds from a podium place! A huge well done to Sam from all of us at KEVI!

The King Edward VI School

invites you to attend our exhibition of everyday school lives in the 20th century

Find us in the Youth Centre  (at the top of the Lower School Drive)

Saturday 19 September 2026

10.30 – 2.30

Refreshments will be available

Our school is delighted to take part in the town’s Heritage Weekend and we’d like to invite you to come along to our exhibition in the Youth Centre and see how everyday school life has changed over the 20th century.  At the start of the century, girls and boys were taught in entirely separate schools and only over time did they come together. The school name, uniform and buildings have changed several times over the years and there will be a display of the various plans and photographs to show some of the changes.  Past essays from pupils, sketches and poetry will also be on display with examples of subjects, extra-curricular clubs, drama and music productions too.  Examples of how pupils coped through the wars and later, how the schools managed the comprehensive system during the 1970s. There will be a special display about the history of the Girls High School with many examples of their work found in the annual school magazines.  Several notable pupils have also been identified from the past and we have news about how two of them in particular helped to save the school from closure.
