CAREERS QUESTIONS - STUDENT AND SEASONAL JOBS.
We’re getting lots of enquiries from college and university students across the North East, asking where to look for seasonal jobs and part-time jobs around their studies. There are many jobs and paid work experience opportunities you can do as a student, from roles on campus to internships and placement years, but we've focused here on some of the popular sectors of interest for part-time and seasonal roles in our local area.
Here’s a practical step-by-step guide to help you get started 👇
STEP 1 - Start LOCAL
Start by making a list of places within your travel distance.
Think about:
• Hotels, holiday parks & accommodation
• Restaurants, cafes, bars & fast-food outlets
• Family and tourist attractions
• Leisure centres & entertainment venues
• Sports venues & stadiums
• Shopping centres & retail parks
Ask yourself:
- What’s nearby?
- Where can I realistically travel to?
- Which places get busier in summer?
STEP 2 - Look at major employers and chains
Many larger employers advertise directly on their own websites, including:
- Subway
- McDonald’s
- KFC
- Greggs
- Burger King
- Costa Coffee
- Starbucks
- Supermarkets and major retailers
As well as national job sites such as Indeed, others use industry job boards, such as:
- Caterer - www.caterer.com/
- Greene King - www.greeneking.co.uk/
- Mitchells and Butler - www.mbplc.com/careers/
STEP 3 - Explore opportunities with smaller businesses
Lots of smaller businesses recruit differently.
Keep an eye out for:
- Signs in windows
- Posts on their social pages or on Facebook local community pages and groups (we share lots of these!)
STEP 4 - Be proactive
If there’s somewhere you’d like to work:
- Pop in and ask how they recruit or call if you prefer, to enquire about vacancies
- Follow their social pages for updates and potential vacancy alerts
STEP 5 - Think outside the box
Summer creates lots of seasonal opportunities with broad-ranging activities aimed at children, young people and families.
Look for:
- Holiday clubs
- Sports camps
- Festivals & local events
- Community activities
- Family entertainment programmes
Some are run by:
- Councils or local authorities
- Charities
- Schools & colleges
- Museums and heritage centres
- Private companies
- Community organisations
- Sports hubs and leisure centres
Our top tips:
• Be proactive – don’t just wait for jobs to appear online. Pop in, call, or message places you’re interested in and show initiative.
• Act fast – many summer and entry-level roles are filled quickly. If you see something suitable, apply as soon as you can.
