There are lots of jam-jars containing excerpts from popular books on teachers desks. Students will be given response sheets to complete – they need to find the jars, identify the book and submit their form to the LRC by lunchtime on Friday 3 March.

What’s that Quote?

Around A-Floor there are lots of quotes from the set texts in Englishhanging on the walls. Students need to hunt them out and identify the book and character. Entry forms handed in to the LRC by Lunchtime on Friday 3 March. More student prizes available!

Student Book Club

17th January 2023Mr S Connor

We love encouraging all of our students to read. Whilst our students read lots of different texts in lesson, it is also brilliant to see them reading for pleasure. All students are invited to come along to our Book Club which is held every Wednesday at 3:30 in the Library. This is a great opportunity to make new friends and explore fantastic books, whilst having a hot chocolate and a biscuit.

If you have any questions, pop in to see our librarian at break or lunchtime or email [email protected]

KEVI goes to Pantoland!

13th December 2022Mr S Connor

Two coach loads of GCSE Drama students descended on the Theatre Royal, Newcastle, for the opening matinee of Cinderella. With our very own Prince Charming Mr Connor, Miss Thomas aka ‘Cinders’ and the Grande Dame Fatale herself Mrs Anderson (who was picked on mercilessly throughout by Dannay Adams).  Mr Cusworth also came along and created a set of costume sketches to help our students with their analytical writing for their GCSE studies. Students have since spent lesson time dissecting the theatrical and technical production elements of the performance.

Everyone had a wonderful time, choc ices, lollies and sweets. Newcastle still hasn’t recovered yet!

Happy Christmas from The Drama Department!

Remembrance Service

9th November 2022Mr S Connor

Reverend Paul Rusby led our Remembrance Service on Tuesday.  Year 9 form representatives and cadets were in attendance and our Senior Students laid wreaths on behalf of the school, the Edwardian’s Association and the Foundation Governors in remembrance and tribute to all who suffered or died in war.

In World War One, 58 Old Boys and one member of staff paid the supreme sacrifice. Most of them found their last place of rest far from home: in Belgium, in France, in Gallipoli, in Poland, at sea; many of them have no known graves.

In the Second World War, by a strange coincidence, yet another 58 Old Boys perished in War – this time together with two members of staff. Only a few of them are buried in the UK. The remainder lie in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany, in Iceland and Italy, in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, in Burma and in Singapore. Again, many have no known grave but the sea.

In the Korean War of 1953, one Old Boy was killed while fighting for the United Nations in the cause of world peace.

In gratitude for the service and sacrifice of all these young men – their average age was only 24 – Anya Dunphy took the reading and Mr Tedder read The Pride of the Poppy.

The service ended with the Last Post played on trumpet by Matthew Turner and Will Straughan supported by Ms Waterhouse.
