The King Edward VI School is reporting another set of excellent GCSE results today.
Clare Savage, Headteacher said, “I would like to congratulate all Year 11 students and staff on an excellent set of GCSE results which is testament to our Year 11’s positive attitudes, determination and hard work.
I am proud of every one of our students who have worked so hard to achieve such fantastic grades. They have had a challenging time during the past two years, but they have been committed to their studies and sat their exams with confidence and determination. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff on behalf of our students for all the support they have given them. “
Jack Quinlan, Head of Year stated “This was a great year group with a really positive work ethic. They fully deserve these wonderful results and I wish them the very best for the next step in their educational journey.”
80% of students achieved a grade 4 or above in both English and Maths. The majority of King Edward’s students will be joining their Sixth form in September whilst others will follow other further education courses or apprenticeship opportunities.

The King Edward VI School Year 13 students have achieved excellent A level and level 3 vocational results today.
The school is delighted that almost three-quarters of students are now moving into higher education at a number of high performing universities including Oxbridge, many Russell Group and Ivy League institutions.
Headteacher, Clare Savage commented:
“These incredibly positive results represent all the hard work of our students throughout their time at King Edward’s. It is also an illustration of the dedication and commitment of the staff and parents who have supported our students to enable them to achieve so highly.
As they prepare to move on to further study or work, I would like to thank our students for the significant and positive contribution they have made to our school. They have excelled in so many fields and we have been so impressed by all of their achievements. We wish all of our students every success in their future endeavours.”
Leanne Johnston, Head of Post 16 thanked the students for their efforts and congratulated them on their successes. “The progress each and every student has made throughout Sixth Form is exceptional with many exceeding their target grades, which is fantastic.
We are delighted at the range of exciting opportunities they are taking up. The courses applied for continue to expand and reflect the varied interests and talents of our students. We have students moving on to Conservatoires and the Royal College of Music, degree choices from Film and TV production to Midwifery, Fashion and Textiles to Robotics. Optometry, International Relations and everything in between. Several are pursuing apprenticeships in a range of fields, from Business Admin to Engineering. Whatever their next step, we wish all our students the very best for the future.”
Over a third of all entries were A*- A grades, almost 90% of all entries were A*- C grades and the average grade achieved was a grade B. A number of students performed outstandingly well, including 26 students who achieved all A-A* grades, 9 of which achieved all A*grades.

There are lots of activities going on in school this week to celebrate World Book Day. Students will receive a Book Token in their English lessons and they can trade these in at school for a free book (or use them at a participating book shop).
Our staff are sharing their favourite reads with students in assembly, to show that reading is a life-long passion and is central to our learning and development.
Students and staff are battling it out in our annual ‘Shelfie’ Competition. Take part here – all you need to do is try to name the member of staff who might own that bookshelf. Prizes on offer for our winners.
Our Book Quiz also returns for students – do you really think you know your stuff when it comes to books? Take the quiz here. More prizes to be won.
We are excited to announce that tickets will be on sale for our greatly anticipated 2022 Musical Annie. Students and staff have been working incredibly hard to prepare a stunning performance – tickets will be on sale from Monday 28 February available at Main Reception during break and lunchtimes. The performances will be held in Lower School Hall. Adults £10, 18 and under £7.
Lauren Gilhom, A-level Art & Design/Photography class of 2020, has been awarded the prestigious Michael Ormerod Photography Travel Award. Lauren is currently studying Photography at Newcastle University and is the first ever Level 4 student to win the award. Lauren pitched her photo-shoot proposal to the panel of judges, including all the financial and logistics involved, and created the artwork during Summer 2021 in Scotland. We are all very proud of Lauren on her achievement and look forward to seeing the work in person in her exhibition at Mandela Gallery, Newcastle University, 21 February to 7 March.
