Year 9 – Sense of Place Project

23rd July 2023Andrew Baxter

Over the past two weeks we have had the amazing opportunity to create some poetry and
stained glass art through Newcastle University and with professional stained glass artist,
Helen Grierson.

On Thursday 6th July we travelled to The Sill on Hadrian’s wall where we had a presentation
about ‘Poems in the Air’ and learnt about the amazing partnership between Northumberland
National Park and Simon Armitage. We then looked around the centre and saw where our
poems and stained glass were going to be displayed. Afterwards, we walked the short
distance along the wall to Sycamore Gap and learnt about the history of the area and started
to form ideas about our poems.

Some of the poems can be viewed here.

On Tuesday the 11th July we headed to Newcastle University for the day where we first got
to have a tour of the brilliant library facilities and looked at the historical books there. We
then had a lecture by John Chalice, a member of the English Faculty, and a workshop to
help to develop our poetry ideas further and show us many techniques to improve our
poems. The workshop was incredibly helpful to develop the poems and really it helped to
have an experienced writer to suggest improvements.

Finally, on Thursday the 13th July, we went back to Newcastle University where we went on
a nature walk around the university taking brief drawings and notes about what they could
see, hear and smell around the campus site, then walked around the Hatton Gallery. We
then produced stained glass artwork with Helen Grierson, a Northumberland stained glass
artist, using the natural landscape of Hadrian’s Wall and our poems to create some beautiful
stained glass pieces.

It was a truly inspirational and unique experience allowing us to explore our individual
creativity and have fun.

Our work will be exhibited at The Sill from the 11th August until mid-September.

Sports Day ignites passion and team spirit

18th July 2023Andrew Baxter

An unforgettable event for students and teachers on a day of competition and enjoyment

This year’s sports day was an exciting one for our students. Students competed in order to gain glory for their houses, however despite all this competition, there was still an incredibly positive atmosphere, thanks to staff and students cheering on competitors and the good sportsmanship demonstrated on the day.

The true essence of Sports Day lay not only in the students’ pursuit of victory but also in fostering a sense of unity and school pride in our community. The compassion shown by the students towards those competing and their fellow classmates was brilliant to see.

Sports Day demonstrates exactly what our school is about.

Art with a message

17th July 2023Samuel Connor

We were really proud to see a selection of artwork by our students on display at local gallery, Tallantrye 2, in Sanderson Arcade, Morpeth. Each pieve of work tells a story about climate change and it was fantastic so see such thought proviking responses from our young people about such an important issue. This was part of The Three Rivers Learning Trust Climate Festival 2023. Thank you to Tallantyre’s for their support with this project.

A Successful Summer Serenade

17th July 2023Samuel Connor
This year’s sold-out summer concert titled ‘A Summer Serenade’ was held in Lower School Hall last Thursday (13th July). Featuring almost 150 students across all year groups, it showcased all of the ensembles that KEVI currently has to offer: Jazz Band, Concert Band, Choir, Chamber Choir, Ceilidh Band and KEVI Steel Pans. Solo were performed by Helen Graham on flute, Rose Ho on saxophone and Iona Lane (vocals) in addition to The Free Range Cats delivering a triumphant last performance before they all head off to university.
The concert was complemented with decorations made by KEVI’s Art Club and cakes made by the Y12/13 Food Technology students. I would like to thank all of the staff and students involved for helping to put on such a fantastic performance that really illustrates KEVI’s thriving music department.

Gold Mark Award

7th July 2023Andrew Baxter

The PE Department is delighted to announce that we, The King Edward VI School, have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2022/23 academic year.

This award is to reward and recognise school’s engagement (provision and uptake) in the School Games against a national benchmark and to celebrate keeping young people active. We are delighted to have been recognised at this level for our success.

We are extremely proud of our students for their dedication to all aspects of physical activity and school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our events possible. We are also committed to using the School Games to try and engage those young people who haven’t previously been active or represented our school. We want to ensure that all of our students have a positive experience and try out new activities beyond school, within our community. We strongly believe in the power of physical activity and school sport and will continue to provide opportunities for all of our students.

Thank you to all departments and SLT for supporting us with extra curricular provision throughout this academic year, allowing us to strive and achieve once again, the Gold Mark Award.
