Gold Mark Award

7th July 2023Andrew Baxter

The PE Department is delighted to announce that we, The King Edward VI School, have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2022/23 academic year.

This award is to reward and recognise school’s engagement (provision and uptake) in the School Games against a national benchmark and to celebrate keeping young people active. We are delighted to have been recognised at this level for our success.

We are extremely proud of our students for their dedication to all aspects of physical activity and school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our events possible. We are also committed to using the School Games to try and engage those young people who haven’t previously been active or represented our school. We want to ensure that all of our students have a positive experience and try out new activities beyond school, within our community. We strongly believe in the power of physical activity and school sport and will continue to provide opportunities for all of our students.

Thank you to all departments and SLT for supporting us with extra curricular provision throughout this academic year, allowing us to strive and achieve once again, the Gold Mark Award.

KEVI celebrates environmental success at the Love Northumberland Awards

27th June 2023Andrew Baxter

Student’s environmental efforts recognised by Northumberland County Council

Now in their 14th year, ‘LOVE Northumberland – caring for our county’ is a campaign that aims to promote the work of the council and its partners in preserving and improving the environment in the county, celebrating community spirit and promoting county pride.

It’s aimed at getting everyone in Northumberland involved in keeping the county clean and green. Northumberland is known for its breathtaking scenery and wide-open spaces, but it also has a reputation for its environmental quality.

This year, KEVI Environment Council submitted an application for the ‘Best Young People’s Project’ and were announced as category winners by the Duchess of Northumberland on Wednesday 22nd June at the awards ceremony held at Alnwick Gardens.

Our Environmental Council is made up of students from Year 10 & 11; their aim is to raise awareness about environmental issues and develop project actions that will make a difference in school and the community.

Working with Dai Richards from Keep Morpeth Tidy, the students developed and delivered a poster competition inviting young people from a number of schools across Morpeth to design a poster for the litter bins across the town. The competition gained lots of interested, with over 400 entries. The judges had a very difficult task choosing the shortlist, and overall winner. They planned a poster competition to engage children in all the Morpeth schools, inviting them to design posters that would encourage everyone in the town to bin their litter rather than drop it on the ground. Winning posters were then printed and placed onto all the litter bins around Morpeth. First, second and third prizes for the posters were given to pupils in every school with financial support from the Keep Britain Tidy group and support from Morpeth Rotary, The Lions, Town Council and GMDT.

Particular recognition must go to Dylan Sneddon, who showed excellent leadership, organisational skills and dedication to the project, along with Catalina Chaundler-Martinez and Jenny Marriott.

The poster competition created a lot of excitement around the town and in the schools. The feedback that we received from from children who entered their posters into the competition, and also their families was amazing. Everyone was really excited and delighted to see all the posters on display.

Dr Wendy Fail, Vice Chair of the School Governing Body, who attended the awards ceremony, stated, ‘I am extremely proud of all the efforts made by the Environment Council, and I am thrilled that their hard work has been recognised. It was a great privilege to represent KEVI at the awards ceremony and accept the award, along with Dylan and Dai, from the Duchess of Northumberland.”

We are very proud of their efforts; they support the Net Zero ambition of the Three Rivers and aim to make all of our schools more sustainable.

Our Environmental Council, supported by Sheila Clark also advise, present and make climate and environmental recommendations to the full School Council (approx. 120 students from year groups 9-13). Regular environmental and climate updates are also provided by the council to every student in KEVI via their Form groups and Form reps.

J’adore la musique

27th June 2023Andrew Baxter
In January this year, six of our year 10 Modern Foreign Language and Music students teamed up with the aim of creating an original French pop song and accompanying music video to enter in a national competition organised by Francophonie UK in association with the Institut français du Royaume-Uni and supported by TV5Monde. Their song ‘J’adore la musique’ was selected by the national jury and, along with the other finalists, our students were invited to a virtual celebration of La Fête de la Musique on Wednesday 21st June, where they would enjoy live music and find out which entrants would become this year’s winners.

To mark the occasion, students, family and teachers came together for a night of food, fun and festivities and were delighted to discover our students had been crowned national champions!
Throughout the process the students, and everyone involved in supporting them, have championed the values of creativity and collaboration which I think is not only evident in their music video, but also in the photo below.
If you would like to watch the ceremony (and re-live our students being crown champions (Time stamp 17 minutes 44 seconds)), here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq64dmnbAvI
Equally, if you would like to watch our students’ pop video here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvKQfb0HJyA

Morpeth’s One Big Performance

24th May 2023Andrew Baxter

Morpeth’s One Big Performance, supported by Music Partnership North, involved first and middle schools and the King Edward VI School high school – more than 400 children in total.

Held in a large marquee on the Newminster Middle School field, each school performed to each other and there were joint activities throughout the day that involved all children in a massed ceilidh and choir, body percussion fun and a quiz.

Charlotte Jones, curriculum leader of the creative arts at Newminster Middle School, who was one of the organisers of the event, said: “It was a very special day that combined a love of music with our community. The pupils who performed were a credit to their schools and the talent on show was incredible!

Year 11 Rewards Evening

16th May 2023Andrew Baxter

Year 11 Rewards Evenings

Last week we celebrated our Y11 students achievements at our annual Y11 Rewards Evenings. These evenings are a well-established tradition, celebrating the endeavours, accomplishments and achievements of all of our Year 11 students. They have excelled in so many fields and it was fantastic to hear of their successes throughout each evening. All students received awards for a variety of achievements from Services to school, the arts, sport, subject progress, attitude to learning and attendance.

Rewards were presented by our guest speaker Simon Taylor OBE and throughout each evening we were also treated to fantastic musical and dance performances from current Year 11 students.

The evening ended with Ms Clare Savage, Headteacher leading thanks to tutors and parents for their support but also to our fantastic Year 11 for the significant contribution they have made to our school during their time with us.

Overall, the evening was a huge success and there was an enormous sense of pride in the room. The evening was a true celebration of all that represents The King Edward VI School.

Special Awards were given as follows.

Citizenship Award – Kaleb Beadsworth

For his care and compassion in dealing with a serious incident involving a member of the public.  He acted calmly and swiftly in trying to help this person, giving accurate and helpful information to the emergency services.  Although the situation was highly distressing, he did the right thing and acted in a most responsible manner.

Services to School Award –  Sophie Fraser

Sophie has been involved in many extra curricular activities; as a member of the ceilidh band, the concert band and the Steel Pan band.  She is also a member of the school Choir and Chamber choir.  She is an excellent performer on the accordion, and cornet and her talents on the Northumbrian pipes mean that she is in high demand to perform at local events.

Jonathan Phillpott Award –  Augustine Pond

This award is for demonstrating resilience in overcoming challenges.

Augustine is reflective about work that he finds difficult and he constantly strives to improve. He has made a conscious effort to develop his social skills.  He is always polite, considerate of others and willing to engage in conversation. He is highly respectful and is highly regarded  by his peers and teachers alike. He has repeatedly demonstrated a genuine interest in others and has been involved in charity fundraising activities within school.  He has been reliable and keen to participate in these events to support local charities.

Jane Mann Award for contribution to the Arts – Eva Clarke

Eva’s contribution to The Arts and the Drama Department has been commendable.  She has taken every opportunity to become involved in all performances as well as extending her talents outside of school. She has excellent flair in producing creative work, supporting others in their performances and submitting an outstanding piece of coursework.  Her dedication and passion for the subject has also inspired her to further her interests in performance, where she will no doubt be extremely successful.

The Gillian Gordon Sports Award for Girls – Skye Dorrian

Skye has represented the school in numerous sports such as netball, cricket, rounders and Athletics and she has stepped up as a young leader in several sports too. In addition, what is remarkable about this particular student, is the manner in which she has conducted herself during her involvement with the PE department both in lessons and in her many extra-curricular activities.  She is quietly confident, determined and competent, always helpful and always cheerful.

The Gillian Gordon Sports Award for Boys – Ben Hewitt

Ben is an excellent example of someone who has enhanced their educational experience at King Edward’s by getting involved in the wide variety of extracurricular sports that are on offer within our very successful PE Department. He has shown dedication and commitment to both extracurricular clubs and has also represented the school at Football, Athletics and Cross Country. Ben has worked exceptionally hard in both his theory and practical GCSE PE lessons throughout the two year course.
