KEVI Inspires XI

8th October 2024Jump Marketing

2024 brings with it the 11th incarnation of our hugely popular careers event. KEVI Inspires is an opportunity for our students and their families to explore life beyond King Edward’s and see the benefits of becoming truly Accomplished Students who have a wealth of opportunity before them.

Pot 16 and Post 18 pathways can feel bewildering and daunting, but speaking to previous students and long-time associates of the event, students and families can be inspired and informed about their choices.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to all of the exhibitors, many of whom have attended every single KEVI Inspires event. We literally could not do it without their support. We look forward to seeing all of our King Edward’s community at the event on Thursday 24 October.

The King Edward VI School celebrating success on Results Day

The King Edward VI School is reporting another set of excellent GCSE results today following our best ever set of A Level results last week.

Clare Savage, Headteacher said, “I would like to congratulate all Year 11 students and staff on our results which is a testament to our Year 11’s positive attitudes, determination and hard work.  I am proud of every one of our students who have worked so hard to achieve such fantastic grades. They have been committed to their studies and sat their exams with confidence and determination. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all staff on behalf of our students for all the support they have given them.”

Adele Tansey, Year 11 Lead stated “I am very pleased to congratulate our Year 11 students on their excellent GCSE results.  Our students have worked incredibly hard over the last two years and thoroughly deserve the results that they have been awarded.  I am particularly pleased that a significant number of our students have achieved top grades and over ¾ of our students achieved a 4 or above in English and Maths.”

The majority of our students will return to King Edward’s 6th Form in September. We still have some spaces available for any student wishing to join our 6th Form this year and they can apply via the website at sixthformkevi.cheviotlt.co.uk.

Sixth Form Community Stars

18th July 2024Jump Marketing

A group of sixth form students have successfully completed voluntary work with Greater Morpeth Development Trust to develop the first of the town’s new history displays.  The team have spent the last nine months researching and designing five new local history display boards for the town.

King Edward’s students are encouraged to look outside school for voluntary activities in order to help prepare them for life beyond school. This project provided the perfect opportunity to get involved in something new, different and challenging that would create a difference in our town.

With the help of experts from various heritage groups in Morpeth, this project has presented our students with the opportunity to learn a great deal about people and places. They travelled to Newcastle to meet students doing History degrees at Newcastle University and explore common grounds for research. They worked with staff at County Hall to discuss ideas and plans for developing a new history website which now works alongside the displays at St Mary’s Church.

As part of their research stage, they not only visited places, but also hosted guests in school and met with Nigel Collingwood and Paul MacDonald from the Collingwood society, Mike Booth, a local volunteer with the Commonwealth War Graves Commision. Andrew Tebbutt on behalf of the Emily Davison family; Frances Povey from NCC Green spaces and Dr Marie Addyman, a specialist in the history of William Turner and the Carlisle Park Tudor and Physic garden dedicated to Turner.

On Wednesday afternoon, 17th July 2024, their research and design work came to fruition as the first three of the town’s new history displays were unveiled. The first display highlights the history of the church itself. The second display is about some of the Notable Morpethians buried in the churchyard with information about various people including the Epsom races winner jockey Ralph Bullock and the suffragette Emily Davison. The final display in the churchyard is about the many different types of war graves, WW1, WW2, Polish war graves, the RAF at Tranwell Woods and other background stories. The next two displays dedicated to Admiral Lord Collingwood and William Turner are due to be launched between September and October this year.

Our thanks to Dai and the GMDT for offering this opportunity to the students in our school. Thanks also go to all the people behind the scenes from the town’s Heritage network that helped to advise and check the displays for any mistakes.  Special thanks to our guests representing the Collingwood society, the Friends of William Turner, the  Emily Davison family and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for all their personal insights and stories. Thanks must also go to the staff at County Hall for all of their support and to Darren Turner from cbsworld for his design advice and guidance.

Together, we’ve helped to bring our town’s history alive.

School Games Gold Award

9th July 2024Jump Marketing

The PE Department is delighted to announce that we, The King Edward VI School, have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2023/24 academic year.

This award is to reward and recognise school’s engagement (provision and uptake) in the School Games against a national benchmark and to celebrate keeping young people active. We are delighted to have been recognised at this level for our success.

We are extremely proud of our students for their dedication to all aspects of physical activity and school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our events possible. We are dedicated to ensuring our students have the opportunity to compete in sport across all levels of performance and are also committed to using the School Games to try and engage those young people who haven’t previously been active or represented our school. We want to ensure that all of our students have a positive experience and try out new activities beyond school, within our community. We strongly believe in the power of physical activity and school sport and will continue to provide opportunities for all of our students.

Thank you to all staff and SLT who have supported us with extra curricular provision including our highly successful Sports Tour during this academic year. Collaboratively, we have once again strived for and achieved the Gold Mark Award.

Finalist in The Northern School of Art’s First Foundation Art Prize

19th June 2024Jump Marketing

Congratulations to Oliver Redman on making the shortlist of thirteen finalists selected from all the entries by the Foundation Diploma course teachers in The Northern School of Art’s inaugural Foundation Art Prize competition.

Oliver’s work was chosen from over ninety entries to the competition, which was devised and overseen by the School’s Middlesbrough campus Foundation Art Diploma course to celebrate the talents of young creatives in the North East and Yorkshire and Humber regions.

Oliver  ‘La Sagrada Familia’ was inspired by a recent trip to the city of Barcelona. On this visit, he was taken back by the sheer intricate beauty of this historic building. This links to his project in A-Level art based on architecture

Oliver commented, “When I heard about the competition, I knew it would be a struggle to complete in time, but with much hard work and countless hours spent completing the piece, I was able to finish before the deadline. In a way, it feels topical that this piece would take so much from me, as it was the essence of Gaudi’s life’s work, and took him so long, he was never able to see it completed himself.”
