Our school community paid tribute this morning to the country’s longest serving monarch. Her Majesty’s service over the past seven decades has been an inspiration.
During the period of mourning our public communications will be limited.
We appreciate this news will be upsetting for some and pastoral support will be available in school for those that need it.
As you will be aware, Monday 19 September is designated as a Bank Holiday for the State Funeral of the Queen. School will therefore be closed to all staff and students on this day, reopening as usual on Tuesday 20 September.
We very much look forward to welcoming your child back to school next week and working together with you to support them through the next year of their education.
Year 9: Please ensure that your child arrives at Student Support before 9.00am on Tuesday 6 September so that they have time to find out their tutor group before they are registered by their new form tutor.

The King Edward VI School is reporting another set of excellent GCSE results today.
Clare Savage, Headteacher said, “I would like to congratulate all Year 11 students and staff on an excellent set of GCSE results which is testament to our Year 11’s positive attitudes, determination and hard work.
I am proud of every one of our students who have worked so hard to achieve such fantastic grades. They have had a challenging time during the past two years, but they have been committed to their studies and sat their exams with confidence and determination. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff on behalf of our students for all the support they have given them. “
Jack Quinlan, Head of Year stated “This was a great year group with a really positive work ethic. They fully deserve these wonderful results and I wish them the very best for the next step in their educational journey.”
80% of students achieved a grade 4 or above in both English and Maths. The majority of King Edward’s students will be joining their Sixth form in September whilst others will follow other further education courses or apprenticeship opportunities.
The King Edward VI School Year 13 students have achieved excellent A level and level 3 vocational results today.Â
The school is delighted that almost three-quarters of students are now moving into higher education at a number of high performing universities including Oxbridge, many Russell Group and Ivy League institutions.Â
Headteacher, Clare Savage commented:Â
“These incredibly positive results represent all the hard work of our students throughout their time at King Edward’s. It is also an illustration of the dedication and commitment of the staff and parents who have supported our students to enable them to achieve so highly.Â
As they prepare to move on to further study or work, I would like to thank our students for the significant and positive contribution they have made to our school. They have excelled in so many fields and we have been so impressed by all of their achievements. We wish all of our students every success in their future endeavours.”Â
Leanne Johnston, Head of Post 16 thanked the students for their efforts and congratulated them on their successes. “The progress each and every student has made throughout Sixth Form is exceptional with many exceeding their target grades, which is fantastic.Â
We are delighted at the range of exciting opportunities they are taking up. The courses applied for continue to expand and reflect the varied interests and talents of our students. We have students moving on to Conservatoires and the Royal College of Music, degree choices from Film and TV production to Midwifery, Fashion and Textiles to Robotics. Optometry, International Relations and everything in between. Several are pursuing apprenticeships in a range of fields, from Business Admin to Engineering. Whatever their next step, we wish all our students the very best for the future.”
Over a third of all entries were A*- A grades, almost 90% of all entries were A*- C grades and the average grade achieved was a grade B. A number of students performed outstandingly well, including 26 students who achieved all A-A* grades, 9 of which achieved all A*grades.

The King Edward VI School celebrated the career of one of its longest serving members of staff this weekend with two concerts to mark the end of his 26 years at the school.
Robin Forbes – Subject Leader of Music, who will retire at the end of term joined the school in September 1996 and the concerts saw students and staff, both past and present come together to show their appreciation for his work at the school over the last quarter of a century.
The traditional KEVI Summer Concert began with Year 13 student Elizabeth Bennett joining the orchestra to deliver Orpheus in the Underworld Overture. Elizabeth has been offered a place at Harvard next year to study music. Performances by the Steel Pan Band, Chamber Choir, Ceilidh Band, Jazz Band and Choir followed, showcasing a huge array of talent from the school.
A second concert at St James Church Morpeth, was filled with contributions from alumni who, over the last 26 years have been privileged to have been inspired by Robin’s teaching. Many have gone on to professional music careers such as Charlotte Christensen who has trained and performed with the Royal Academy of Music and flew in from Germany to perform Mr Snow from Carousel, whilst Alex Banfield, a British opera and concert tenor who left King Edward’s in 2008 performed Mattinata by Ruggero Leoncavallo. Â
Headteacher Clare Savage commented.
“Robin has always insisted that the point of being a musician is to perform, and therefore his commitment to giving every student the chance to play in front of an audience is at the centre of everything he does. The personal loyalty and commitment that Robin has managed to create was evident in every performance on Saturday and it was an honour to see so many students, parents and staff, both past and present, come along to let Robin know how much he means to them.”
Robin’s career has seen him take students on tour across Europe and has included student performances at St Marks in Venice and the Duomo in Florence. The school has also benefited from him leading many varied extra curricular events over the years including Carmina Burana, Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem as well as traditional Musicals and Carol Services. Â
In response to a wonderful ovation, Robin acknowledged the constant support and expertise of departmental colleague Heather Harrison and the many other staff and community musicians who have enriched the breadth and depth of music provision at King Edward’s over the years. His unique talent has been to bring so many young people and adults together to provide a very special experience. Â
