Congratulations to Emma Gerrard who has recently been selected for the England U18’s Women’s Rugby Squad.
As you may well have heard in the media, the National Education Union (NEU) has announced that its ballot of teacher members in England has met the thresholds required to commence industrial action. Planned dates for planned strike action in our region have been announced as:

- Tuesday 28 February
- Wednesday 15 March

We are currently awaiting further information to identify what impact this will have on our ability to continue to remain open fully to all students. We will obviously endeavour for this to be the case, however, we wanted to give you as much notice as possible so that, should you need to, alternative arrangements can be made for your child.
We will contact you as soon as we have any further information.

We love encouraging all of our students to read. Whilst our students read lots of different texts in lesson, it is also brilliant to see them reading for pleasure. All students are invited to come along to our Book Club which is held every Wednesday at 3:30 in the Library. This is a great opportunity to make new friends and explore fantastic books, whilst having a hot chocolate and a biscuit.
If you have any questions, pop in to see our librarian at break or lunchtime or email [email protected]

We are delighted to share the news that Simon Taylor, CEO of The Three Rivers Learning Trust, has been awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours List.
The OBE is an award in the category of: The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. The award goes to someone who exemplifies large contributions to the arts, sciences, charitable works and public service.
Initially beginning his career in education as a history teacher in 1985, Simon Taylor has since held several senior leadership positions in secondary schools before becoming Headteacher at The King Edward VI School in 2007. Since 2018 Simon has served as CEO of The Three Rivers Learning Trust. He has also been a National Leader of Education and a Northumberland School Improvement Partner, working with a number of schools in the area, helping to support school improvement.
“I feel very humbled and proud to have received this honour. I have worked with so many hardworking and talented colleagues, who make a difference to the lives of children and young people on a daily basis. I would like to dedicate this award to those I have worked with, in appreciation of their support and dedication.”
With a total of 38 years experience in working with schools across Gateshead, Newcastle and Northumberland, Simon was contacted by New Years Honours list at the end of 2022 to receive the great news.
Clare Savage, Headteacher commented “Colleagues, students and parents are all delighted to hear this fantastic news and are thrilled that Simon has been honoured for his outstanding services to education across the North East. I have worked with Simon for the past 15 years and his commitment to the education of the young people of our region has been an inspiration to all who have had the privilege of working with him.”
Tony stated “Thanks to the excellent education at King Edward’s, I was accepted, enrolled and later graduated from the Sheffield School of Architecture.”
He is now retired from his practice, ACI Architecture inc, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

We are expecting full attendance through to the end of the year and as such will follow up all absences in conjunction with the education welfare service. Term finishes on Friday 23 December at 3.25pm. There is a staff Training Day on Monday 9 January and school will reopen to all students on Tuesday 10 January 2023.
On behalf of all staff at King Edward’s I would like to wish you all a peaceful and restful Christmas break.

Two coach loads of GCSE Drama students descended on the Theatre Royal, Newcastle, for the opening matinee of Cinderella. With our very own Prince Charming Mr Connor, Miss Thomas aka ‘Cinders’ and the Grande Dame Fatale herself Mrs Anderson (who was picked on mercilessly throughout by Dannay Adams). Mr Cusworth also came along and created a set of costume sketches to help our students with their analytical writing for their GCSE studies. Students have since spent lesson time dissecting the theatrical and technical production elements of the performance.
Everyone had a wonderful time, choc ices, lollies and sweets. Newcastle still hasn’t recovered yet!
Happy Christmas from The Drama Department!

We are acutely aware that the work of the food bank can only continue with the support of local people. Please see here for more information.
