Context of the School

The King Edward VI School is the only high school in the Northumberland market town of Morpeth. We cater for approximately 1500 students from Year 9 (aged 13) to Year 13. Our largely rural catchment area stretches almost 40 miles north to the Scottish border.

Our Sixth Form takes students with five GCSEs at grade 4 or better. We are proud of our inclusive entry criteria which allows the vast majority of our Year 11 students to return to us for Post 16 study and increasinly, we are seeing more students move from other High Schools to join us in Year 12. Historically, our ability on intake into the Sixth Form is significantly below the national average, but our Value Added figure has been significantly positive for a number of years. Attainment and progress have remained in-line with our historical data trends over the last two results series incorporating Center Assessed Grades (2020) and Teacher Assessed Grades (2021). Our 2022 outcomes were 62.2% A* – B.

The overwhelming majority of students in our Sixth Form study three A Level or equivalent courses, a small number of students with a niche interest will study four A Level or equivalent. All courses currently lead to examinations at the end of Year 13, with the exception of the Level 3 BTEC/Cam Tech courses. In addition we also offer Core Maths and Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) as optional additional courses, these are certified at the end of Year 12 and the November of Year 13 respectively. We provide and extensive Enrichment programme to all of our students.

Our curriculum offer is extensive; the broadest academic curriculum in the area. All subjects are delivered in nine taught hours per fortnight. The subjects we offer are:
